At the beginning of this course i throught that all i wanted to do was sound, i had already done alot of sound outside of college and was comfitable in using a varried of sound consoles, i was using a soundcraft si exsperssion 2 ( https://www.soundcraft.com/en/products/si-expression-2 ) most weekends and felt very comfotable using this digital console. as i had been using a digital console i was able to adapt my knowledge to use analog as its a simpilier version of a digital console.

however when i came onto this course i started of only wanting a basic understanding of using a lighting console, i already knew how to rig a fixture and how to run apprete power for many objects becuase of my previous job beforehand, but by my second year i was alot keener to learn as much as i could lighting wise, this was becuase of a few things.

the first being the facilites, west minster kings way has a basic but great learning envioment tecnicaly, we have 6 working mover, generic fixture and leds. these are the key types of fixtures used in he industrry, becuase of this i made the most out of the facitlies.

i taught myself 90% of my knowledge of lighting console and fixtures by researching, durign the two years i have spent hours and hours watching youtibe videos and reading forums on problem or tips i have found (https://www.blue-room.org.uk/ and https://www.youtube.com/user/ETCVideoLibrary ) these links are two of the most helpful becuase of the vast knowledge people using these have in there specific areas.

Blue Room is great as it isnt specifc to one manafacture or skill, i used this alot whenever i came across a problem and after many tries was unable to find the answer i needed. this is a great resource to have as its free and is always evoving.

the ECT youtube channel has many great tutoirials into specifc parts and skills you can use on the lgihting console, the great thing about etc is there software doesnt varry alto between models, this means that you can watch any video for any model and it have some meaning or resemalance to your console even if its different. this was helpful as many videos were on the nomad, this is the same for the offline pc version but the console software is the same so was able to transfer show files across.

during the plannign sessions i will keep referring back to the unit critia to make sure i am reaching each indurvisal points, this was helpful as it kept me on task as i have the tendisy to sway of task alot. it also meant that it was somewhat clear what was needed to be done.

The cast decided they wanted a cabaret theme because it includes a large variety of different performances. I started researching cabaret themes, layouts and stages and quickly realised that cabaret is a bright, energetic and colourful themed type of show. I found that many cabarets have tables and chairs for the audience, suggesting that it is a place to relax and chat with friends whilst watching dancing and singing performances.

I also found that they often used bright, showy lighting effects to create an atmosphere. This would be a challenge in our theatre as the curtains are black unlike a cabaret venue which would have colourful curtains. I looked into what lighting fixtures were used in cabaret  and found that light emitting diodes (LED) and Parcans were used regularly. Follow spots are used to attract the audiences attention to a specific person or place and also down facing lights, these are commonly red, green and blue (RGB) fixtures. Gobos were also used to project shapes and patterns on to the floor.

Cabaret is a hard theme as it varys throught the eras, as the tecnologue progresses the cabarets become bigger and posher, but when cabarets were first starting out they were for the poorer people and woud be held in pubs for example, they where for local people to make a little bit of money by performing, this quickly increased and worked its way up to become a well known form of entertament.
